Common sleeping pills linked with higher death risk
Commonly-prescribed sleeping pills are linked to a more-than fourfold risk of premature death, according to an American study published in the journal BMJ Open on Monday. These medications were also associated at higher doses with a 35-percent increased risk of cancer as compared with non-users, but the reason for this is unclear.
Doctors led by Daniel Kripke of the Scripps Clinic Viterbi Family Sleep Center in La Jolla, California, looked at the medical records of more than 10,500 adults living in Pennsylvania who were taking prescribed sleeping aids. These were compared against more than 23,600 counterparts, matched for age, health and background, who did not take these drugs.

Pharmasset buyout bid may be options bonanza for some
Some lucky options players appeared to have placed well-timed bullish bets in biotechnology company Pharmasset Inc’s calls before Gilead Sciences unveiled an $11 billion takeover bid on Monday. Gilead Sciences Inc , the world’s largest maker of HIV drugs, will pay $137 per share for each Pharmasset share, a generous 89 percent premium to Pharmasset’s Friday closing price of $72.67.
The surge in Pharmasset shares of nearly 85 percent to $134.17 in afternoon trade, created an opportunity for some options traders to reap a tidy windfall by taking profits off the table on call positions initiated this month. “As most investors probably don’t anticipate a higher bid to come in, some are using the surge in the share price to book massive profits,” said William Lefkowitz, options strategist at brokerage vFinance Investments in New York.

UK study HIV drugs extend live
Life expectancy for people in Britain who have HIV rose by 15 years between 1996 and 2008, thanks largely earlier diagnosis and treatment with better, less toxic drugs, scientists said on Wednesday. While life expectancy for HIV patients is still lower than in the general population, dramatic progress in reducing side effects from drugs, offering them as combination therapies and starting treatment earlier have helped turn HIV into a chronic disease with a good prognosis, the researchers said.
In a study published in the British Medical Journal, the researchers added that the average lifespan of HIV positive patients should increase further with guidelines recommending they start treatment even earlier with modern, improved drugs. “These results are very reassuring news for current patients and will be used to counsel those recently found to be HIV-positive,” said Mark Gompels of Britain’s North Bristol NHS Trust, who co-led the study.

Chinese herb mix may shorten flu fever
In mild cases of H1N1 influenza, a traditional Chinese herb mixture may relieve a fever about as well as the antiviral drug Tamiflu, researchers reported Monday. The herb product, called maxingshigan-yinqiaosan, is not widely available on store shelves in western countries.
But in a study of 410 Chinese adults with H1N1 flu (also known as swine flu), those who took the herb mixture typically saw their fevers resolve after 16 hours, versus 26 hours in patients in a “control group” whose only flu treatment was acetaminophen (Tylenol) if their fever passed 102 degrees F.
Patients in a third group received the prescription antiviral drug Tamiflu, known generically as oseltamivir. With Tamiflu, fevers typically resolved after 20 hours, or six hours sooner than in the control group.
